Helicobacter Species

Identifying Helicobacter infection as the leading cause of peptic ulcer disease and gastric cancer has dramatically altered the treatment of these disease states. Over the last several decades, scientists have come to understand that the interplay between the bacteria, the host, and the environment all contribute to the clinical outcome of infection. In Helicobacter Species: Methods and Protocols, expert researchers in the field detail many of the methods and which are now commonly used to study Helicobacter infection. These include protocols and methods that have evolved over time, and standards across the field have been established which are essential for optimal outcomes and to allow comparison of data across different laboratories. Written in the highly successful Methods in Molecular Biology(TM) series format, chapters include introductions to their respective topics, lists of the necessary materials and reagents, step-by-step, readily reproducible laboratory protocols, and key tips on troubleshooting and avoiding known pitfalls.Authoritative and practical, Helicobacter Species: Methods and Protocols seeks to aid scientists in further study of this crucially important research into Helicobacter research.

This book summarizes the challenges of Isolation of full length vacuolating cytotoxin A protein from gram negetive bacterium Helicobacter pylori by known molecular biology techniques.Use of cloning and western blotting techniques split this protein into two subunits: P33 and P55. Our understanding of the basic nature and properties of VacA need to be extended for proper isolation of this Cytotoxin protein molecule in complete form.

The Biology of Gastric Cancers

As someone who has spent nearly half his life wondering about the relationship between Helicobacter and gastric cancer, I find this textbook on the subject exciting and timely. In fact, I am not aware of any other volume that has been able to distil so much new knowledge into such a comprehensive account of a poorly understood field. Taking my own view, as a scientist placed in the middle of the spectrum between basic science and clinical medicine, I can see that the editors, Jim Fox, Andy Giraud, and Timothy Wang, provide a broad mix of expertise, which ensures that the subject is treated with the right balance. From clinicopathologic observations in humans, to epidemiology, through animal models, to molecular and cell biology, this team has hit the mark for most readers. Fox is a well-known leader in animal models with broad expertise. He pioneered the field with observations on Helicobacter species in animals, from the time when only one spiral gastric bac- rium was known, "Campylobacter pyloridis. " Fox partners with Wang, whose team recently announced a dramatic advance in the field of carcinogenesis-the obser- tion that bone marrow-derived stem cells participate in the changes that become cancer. To this nice mix has been added Andy Giraud from my own country, who brings to the table some remarkable genetic models of gastric cancer based on alterations in the gp130/stat3-signaling pathway.

This volume reviews the current state of research concerning bacterial virulence factors and the infection biology of Helicobacter pylori , which is the leading cause of peptic ulcers and gastric cancer worldwide. The chapters include cutting-edge findings on this fascinating microbe and discuss the general strategies of H. pylori infection and persistence, news on important H. pylori virulence factors, crosstalk with the microbiota, hot novel models and signaling mechanisms, risk factors of gastric disease and stomach cancer, and the impact of H. pylori infection on non-gastric diseases. Written by internationally respected scientists, this book will appeal to clinicians, researchers and advanced students alike.
