Helicobacter species pylori represent one of the medically prominent and most common infections in the world. Contamination with this microbe has set as a causal factor in the development of gastritis, peptic ulcer, and gastric neoplasia. Consequently, prompt diagnosis is essential. Therefore, regarding all facts about the strong correlation between H. pylori and different upper gastrointestinal lesions, it is very crucial to specify the presence of this bacteria in gastric biopsy reports as it has an important role in the therapeutic implications too. Since, over years pathologists have sought different reliable methods for detecting H. pylori in biopsy specimens, including special stains, immunohistochemistry (IHC), polymerase chain reaction (PCR), and lately, in situ hybridization.

The fourth meeting in the very successful series Helicobacter pylori: Basic Mechanisms to Clinical Cure was held on the island of Bermuda in late March 2000. This was only some two years after the third meeting in San Diego and it seemed hardly possible that there would be so much new information. However, as the contributions in this volume testify, there was plenty of exciting new information with important implications for both understanding this infection and for clinical management. Some of this information was of a fundamental nature, such as the role of the acid sensitive urel channel in regulating the influx of urea and the formation of ammonia transported back in the microbial periplasmic space to neutralize acid, the observation of genetic polymorphism of the IL-1~ gene as an explanation of achlorhydria and gastric cancer risk in the first-degree relatives of gastric cancer patients, and the peculiar biochemical and physio logical consequences of the genome of the microorganisms. The format of the meeting, with short fifteen-minute state-of-the-art pre sentations by world experts closely involved in Helicobacter research fol lowed by ample time for panel discussions, was again followed this year. Traditional aspects included detailed study of the microbial characteristics, the novel Helicobacters, the interaction with the human host, the peculiarities of the inflammatory immune response, the short and long-term mucosal consequences, the effects on acid secretion, the problem of gastric malignancy and the therapeutic possibilities.

Cytokines in the Genesis and Treatment of Cancer provides a comprehensive picture of the dual role of host responses in promoting and inhibiting tumor progression. This volume represents an important investigation into the emerging intersection of cancer biology and cancer immunology. Divided into four sections, the volume's first three parts focus on cytokines in the genesis of cancer. The final section describes the notable progress - both in animal models and humans - in demonstrating the use of cytokine or anticytokine therapies for the prevention and treatment of cancer. Cytokines in the Genesis and Treatment of Cancer brings together an impressive array of internationally distinguished investigators who are devoted to the study of cytokines and cancer. Together, they produce an insightful, comprehensive discussion of cytokines and cancer that will serve as the perfect reference for all those working in the field. TOC:Overview and Introduction to Cancer and Inflammation.- Helicobacter Pylori.- HTLV-1.- Herpes Viruses.- TNF.- TGF-ss.- Interleukin 1 (IL-1) Family of Cytokines.- IL-4/13.- IL-6 and Castleman's disease.- Interleukin 10 (IL-10) Family of Cytokines.- Cytokines in Multiple Myeloma: Therapeutic Implications.- Murine Cytokine Models and the Genesis of Cancer.- Experimental Models of Cytokines and Cancer Prevention.- Cytokines in the Tumor Stroma.- Cytokines and Angiogenesis in Tumors.- Chemokines and Receptor Expression in Tumor Progression.- The Biology of Cancer Cachexia: Role of TNF±.- IL-2.- IL-12.- The Type I Interferon Family.- Combination Cytokine Therapy.- Novel Strategies for Targeting Cytokine Administration.- Cytokines and Cancer Vaccines.- Anti-cytokine Therapy.- Cytokines in the Supportive Care of Cancer.
